A week before announcing KRISTIN KONTROL, sitting on a completed album that signaled, even before its start, the dawn of something new, I had no idea what I was doing.
I'd never spent so much time working on a record. The first six months were disasterious. Driven to expand my work and abandon the concrete template of Dum Dum Girls, I trial-and-errored in foreign territory. I wrote over 45 underwhelming rejects before I wrote that first "a-ha" song.
My announcement of Kristin Kontrol was unceremonious because it reflected a last minute revelation of how to house this new sound. In a moment of clarity I recognized the power of returning to myself.
So many years spent cultivating the story of Dee Dee and her Dum Dum Girls, convinced I was no Robert Zimmerman. So many magic years living off the support and enthusiasm of fans. And I wouldn't take back a second of it.
But I'm 33 now, not a girl, and I've realized that it's time to unbecome all that. I want you to know the real me. I don't want a divide in my art and my life because there isn't one.
Sometimes fear is freeing because it forces you to be bold. I'm diving into unknown waters and I want to take you with me. I promise it will be fun.
So yeah, I’m Kristin... and this is Kristin Kontrol.
The debut longplayer X-Communicate will be released worldwide May 27, 2016 via Sub Pop.
